If you've got the talent and commitment to become an aerospace leader but need financial help, read on!
In 2003, the Royal Aeronautical Society launched the Centennial Scholarship Fund in celebration of one hundred years of flight and to look forward to the next generation of aerospace pioneers and experts in the 21st Century.
Thanks to the generous support of the sponsors of the Fund, representing all areas of membership of the RAeS – from our Corporate Partners large and small, to individual members – the Fund has gone from strength to strength and we have been able to provide support to a number of outstanding students and team initiatives.
Awards include support towards:
- Final year MEng students
- Postgraduate tuition fees to enable young people to undertake Master’s programmes such as Air Transport Management and Aerospace Vehicle Design
- Completion of aerospace-related post-doctorate research projects
- National programmes to encourage young people’s interest in the aviation industry and aerospace engineering.
These include several named awards:
- The Robert Blackburn Award - for aerospace engineering study
- The Alan Snudden Award - for aircraft engineering and safety related study
- The GP Olley Award - for aerospace medicine study and research
- The British Aviation Group Scholarships - for air transport, airport planning and infrastructure study
Since the awards began in 2003, over 125 awards have been made with a value of more than £450,000.00
We run one series of applications annually.
The 2017 Centennial Scholarship is open until 31 May 2017.
Applicants will be notified of the outcome in late August/early September.

British Aviation Group (BAG) Scholarships
The BAG air transport scholarships are now in their second year and offered through the RAeS Centennial Scholarship fund. The British Aviation Group (BAG) is the leading trade association for UK companies involved in the airport and aviation development sectors and is the only association with a membership that covers the full spectrum of airport development expertise in the UK. BAG currently represents over 180 companies all operating in the airport sector, the portfolio of expertise covers strategic planning, financing, master planning, design, construction, equipping, management and operation of airports. BAG’s main objectives are to help these member companies build their business base in the UK, and to succeed in international airport and aviation projects. BAG is a key sectoral group of ADS Group Limited, the UK’s national Aerospace, Defence, Security and Space trade organisation and Careers in Aerospace website partner, but retains a separate membership, brand and programme of activities.
From April 2013, two scholarships annually of a value of £2000.00 each have been made available in 2013 and 2014 as a contribution to tuition fees for students studying courses relating to air transport management and aviation. Applicants should be entering the final year of an undergraduate degree, undertaking a Master’s degree or the final year of a relevant PhD.
Applications for the BAG scholarship are administered via the same procedures as those for the Centennial Scholarship fund. Applicants should use the IndividualApplication form and note on the form their wish to be considered for a BAG scholarship. Applicants should also supply the same supporting information which includes two reference letters – to be posted separately and in time for the closing date – and confirmation of their place on the course for which the funding applies (such as an offer letter or confirmation of enrolment letter from the university).
As with all Centennial applications, the closing date for 2018 applications is 31 May 2018.
